• 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' trailer will be online on Friday too | The Verge
  You won't have to head to the movies to see the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Friday. Star Wars' official Twitter account sent out a message this afternoon saying that the trailer would be published Friday on iTunes. Lucasfilm initially announced that you would have to head out to one of just 30 movie theaters in order to see the trailer, so this is a big change. To heck with shopping, I want to see that trailer.
• Netflix Sues Yahoo CIO Mike Kail for Alleged Fraud | Re/code
  Netflix says a former executive collected kickbacks from vendors he helped connect to the streaming video company. Now Netflix is suing its former employee, who is currently Yahoo’s chief information officer. Netflix filed suit in California state court on Monday, accusing Mike Kail, its former vice president of information technology operations, of fraud, breaching his fiduciary duties and other charges. Kail left Netflix in August of this year, the same month Yahoo announced that he was going to be its CIO, reporting to CEO Marissa Mayer. The Netflix suit says Kail, who joined the company in 2011, arranged Netflix contracts with IT service companies Vistara and NetEnrich, and then pocketed commissions of 12 percent to 15 percent of the monthly fees Netflix paid each company. Netflix says it paid the two companies a total of $3.7 million from 2012 until Kail’s departure, which would mean he could have collected between $450,000 and $560,000. Sounds like he watched too much House of Cards.
• US expresses 'concern' over EU proposal to break up Google - CNET
  The United States doesn't seem to like the European Parliament's proposed breakup of Google. The US Mission to the European Union responded to news of a draft proposal by the European Parliament calling for an "unbundling" of Google's businesses with a disapproving tone. The proposal, reported Friday, aimed to separate Google's search operations from the rest of the company as one solution to antitrust concerns. The European Parliament doesn't have the power to break up Google, but the motion could apply political pressure on the European Commission, which sets the region's legislative agenda. The Commission itself is investigating Google's competitive practices.
• Jackie Chan's 'Police Story 3: Supercop' Blu-Ray Disc Finds Novel Use in Solar Panel : SCIENCE : Tech Times
  Jackie Chan is helping to improve solar cells…in a way. Researchers from Northwestern University bought three copies of Jackie Chan's Police Story 3 on Blu-ray, but it was not to watch the movie. It was actually a random purchase that they needed to study an inexpensive way of improving the efficiency of solar cells used in solar panels. The researchers theorized that Blu-Ray discs could be a cheap way to create quasi-random patterns on solar cells. They used the Jackie Chan movies to create a mold with quasi-random patterns that they stamped into the solar cells to transfer the patterns. They found that the pattern significantly improved the cells' light absorption, with the quasi-random patterned panels absorbing 21.8 percent more light compared with the non-patterned panel, boosting power conversion efficiency by almost 12 percent.
• The CIA and Homeland Security want to delete almost all their emails
  The Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Homeland Security both have recently submitted proposals to the National Archives and Records Administration that outline their plans to delete years' worth of emails, which the Archives has already tentatively approved. If approved, all the correspondences of every person to ever be employed by the CIA will be flushed down the digital toilet three years after they leave. All messages older than seven years old will also be nuked, and only the digital missives of 22 top officials will be preserved — something which several senators do not want to happen. Its critics worry that this would delete important records of the agency's surveillance system called Einstein, among other things, which monitors government websites' traffic. Losing Einstein documentation could either mean bidding valuable data farewell or destroying evidence.
• Oops: After Threatening Hacker With 440 Years, Prosecutors Settle for a Misdemeanor | WIRED
  Last week, prosecutors in the Southern District of Texas reached a plea agreement with 28-year-old Fidel Salinas, in which the young hacker with alleged ties to members of Anonymous consented to plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of computer fraud and abuse and pay $10,000 in restitution. The U.S. attorney’s office omitted one fact from its press release about that plea, however: Just months ago, Salinas had been charged with not one, but 44 felony counts of computer fraud and cyberstalking—crimes that each carry a 10-year maximum sentence, adding up to nearly a half-millennium of prison time. Virtually all of those charges have now been dismissed entirely. And Salinas’s defense attorney Tor Ekeland argues they were piled on based on a faulty reading of computer crime laws, possibly intended to intimidate the young hacker into a unfavorable plea or to damage his reputation.
