Doreen Marchionni (Ph.D. ‘09, Missouri School of Journalism) is a Pacific Northwest native specializing in online news research and journalism-as-a-conversation (participatory media). She is a 17-year veteran of newspapers, primarily as a manager and most recently as an assistant metro editor at The Seattle Times. She received her master’s degree in American Studies from Columbia University (ethnic studies/immigration focus) and used her Ph.D. to find a way to measure the somewhat murky phenomenon of conversational journalism. She teaches journalism/social media, media literacy and editing at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. She presented experimental research data on the measurable features of conversational news at South by Southwest Interactive in 2011. She likes whiskey.
